The short positions in yen held by leveraged funds decreased from 137,828 contracts at the end of June to 77,042 contracts at the end of August. Following interventions in the foreign exchange markets by Japan and the United States, the short burden has lessened; however, the remaining positions and the flow of dollars remain variables that could impact the market for risk assets such as Bitcoin (BTC). According to data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), as of June 30, leveraged funds held long positions of 70,483 contracts and short positions of 208,311 contracts, resulting in a net short of 137,828 contracts. The report on August 25 showed long positions of 66,528 contracts and short positions of 143,570 contracts, indicating a net short of 77,042 contracts, a decrease of 9,071 contracts. On August 1, the Japanese Ministry of Finance, in cooperation with the U.S. Treasury, purchased yen, with the scale of foreign exchange intervention amounting to 15.399 trillion yen. The yen showed short-term strength, rising to 155.25 against the dollar on September 4. The strengthening of the yen could pose a burden for investors holding short positions, potentially leading to adjustments in risk asset positions related to yen carry trades. However, the reasons for the yen's strength are analyzed as being multifaceted, including the strength of the dollar and expectations regarding the Bank of Japan's policies.
