Republicans Consider Raising Debt Ceiling to Avoid Fiscal Crisis
Republicans in the United States are considering raising the debt ceiling before the midterm elections to avoid falling into a fiscal crisis again. Last year, they raised the debt ceiling by $5 trillion. Independent forecasting agencies predict that the U.S. will face a final deadline to avoid a debt default between next summer and early 2028, coinciding with the intensification of the presidential primaries. White House officials have privately suggested raising the U.S. debt ceiling of $41.1 trillion in the spending plan that many Republicans hope to pass before the midterm elections in November. If Republicans lose control of both the House and Senate in the midterm elections, this move could help alleviate pressure on Trump, as Democrats will demand concessions in bipartisan negotiations to avoid a national debt default, which currently stands at nearly $39.7 trillion.
