6 Differences Between Crypto-Based Gold and Digital Gold - Fintech World
Digital gold offers a practical way to gain exposure to gold without having to store physical gold. However, the development of blockchain has given rise to crypto-based gold, which has a different mechanism.
Although there are not many applications selling crypto gold yet, Pintu, as a crypto application with a simple interface, offers crypto gold, tokenized stocks, and tokenized silver ETFs, making it easy for you to diversify assets on one platform.
However, the term digital gold actually encompasses several types of products. One of them is conventional digital gold, which records ownership of gold in the service provider's system. Meanwhile, there is crypto-based gold that utilizes blockchain to represent physical gold in the form of tokens.
If you are monitoring the price of white gold today, it is important to remember that the price of white gold jewelry is not the same as the price of investment gold because the purity, production costs, design, and condition of the jewelry also affect its value.
Therefore, investors also need to differentiate crypto-based gold from white gold. White gold is a type of gold that is usually used as jewelry material, while crypto-based gold is a digital asset whose value can refer to physical gold.

6 Differences Between Crypto-Based Gold and Digital Gold {#6_Differences_Between_Crypto-Based_Gold_and_Digital_Gold}
There are several differences between crypto gold and digital gold, including:
Differences from a Technological Perspective {#Differences_from_a_Technological_Perspective}
Digital gold typically uses a centralized system developed and managed by the service provider company. When an investor buys gold, the platform records the amount of ownership in its internal database.
Meanwhile, crypto-based gold uses blockchain technology. The issuer creates digital tokens that represent a certain amount of physical gold, and then records those tokens on the blockchain network.
Blockchain also allows transactions to be verified through the network. However, the level of transparency still depends on the blockchain and the token issuer used. Therefore, investors should not assume that all gold tokens have the same mechanism.

Differences in Ownership {#Differences_in_Ownership}
Digital gold usually grants investors ownership of a certain amount of gold recorded on the platform. For example, when someone buys 1 gram of digital gold, the platform records a balance of ownership of 1 gram in the user's account.
In crypto-based gold, ownership is represented through tokens. These tokens can be stored in wallets that support the related assets, giving investors greater flexibility in transferring them, depending on the token's terms and the platform.
The differences are important because gold tokens do not always provide the same rights as owning physical gold bars. Investors need to check whether the tokens can be redeemed for physical gold, the redemption process, the minimum redemption amount, and what fees apply.
Differences in Functionality and Storage
Digital gold operates through service provider systems. When users purchase gold, the company records the transaction and manages the physical gold that underlies the ownership according to applicable mechanisms.
Meanwhile, crypto gold uses a tokenization process. First, the issuer provides physical gold as a supporting asset. Then, the issuer stores the gold through a custodian or vault. After that, the issuer creates tokens with a value that refers to the underlying gold.
Investors can then purchase these tokens through digital asset platforms. When an investor sells a token, the ownership of the token transfers to another buyer through the trading system. Thus, the physical gold remains in storage, while the tokens move across the digital network.
Differences in Liquidity and Trading Time
Crypto gold has advantages in terms of trading flexibility. The crypto market operates around the clock, allowing investors to conduct transactions 24/7 as long as the platform and market for the assets are available.
This condition is different from most digital gold services that follow the operational terms of the platform. Although investors can still access the application at any time, the processing time for transactions, withdrawals, or certain services may follow the provider's policies.
However, liquidity is not only determined by trading time. The number of buyers and sellers, transaction volume, and market availability also affect how easily investors can sell their assets. Therefore, investors need to look at the actual liquidity of a token and not just see that the asset is available on the blockchain.
Differences in Risk
Both instruments carry risks as gold prices can rise and fall. However, crypto-based gold has an additional layer of risk stemming from the digital asset ecosystem.
In crypto gold, investors need to consider blockchain risks, wallet security, smart contracts, token liquidity, and issuer risks. Additionally, the price of tokens can also be influenced by crypto market conditions, so their movements do not always align with the price of physical gold in every market condition.
Meanwhile, digital gold presents more risks related to service providers, custodians, operations, and changes in gold prices. Investors also need to pay attention to the spread between buying and selling prices, as the spread can affect investment returns.
Differences in Regulation and Ecosystem
Digital gold generally operates through companies and mechanisms that comply with the regulations of the country where the service is available. Therefore, investors may have a clearer consumer protection pathway, depending on the provider and jurisdiction.
On the other hand, crypto-based gold exists within the digital asset ecosystem. Regulations regarding crypto assets are continually evolving, so rules may differ based on the country, type of token, issuer, and platform used.
In addition to regulations, crypto gold also has advantages in terms of integration with the blockchain ecosystem. Gold tokens can be used in various blockchain-based services if the related protocols and platforms support them. Thus, the function of tokens does not always stop at buying and selling activities.
Understanding Crypto Gold on Pintu {#Understanding_Crypto_Gold_on_Pintu}
One way to understand the concept of crypto-based gold is through Pintu. Pintu offers PAX Gold or PAXG and Tether Gold or XAUt as gold-backed digital assets. Both utilize the concept of tokenization, allowing physical gold to serve as the basis for digital tokens that can be traded within the crypto ecosystem.
PAXG is issued by Paxos, with each PAXG token representing one troy ounce of physical gold stored in a vault according to the issuer's mechanism. Meanwhile, XAUt is issued by Tether and also uses physical gold as the value backing for the token.
Thus, investors can gain exposure to gold through crypto assets without having to hold physical gold bars directly. However, investors still need to understand the terms of each issuer, as the structure, redemption mechanisms, fees, and reserve management may differ.
Ultimately, the difference between crypto-based gold and digital gold lies not only in the form of the asset. Technology, ownership systems, liquidity, risks, regulations, and ecosystems also distinguish the two.
Therefore, the better investors understand each mechanism, the easier it will be for them to determine the instruments that align with their goals and risk tolerance.
