U.S. Clean Energy Set to Increase by 45GW, Driven by AI Power Demand
The U.S. clean energy capacity is expected to increase by 45 gigawatts (GW) this year. This growth is attributed to the rising power demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and the construction demand ahead of the expiration of tax credits for wind and solar energy. S&P Global Energy has reported that the additional capacity for U.S. clean energy will reach 45GW by 2026, marking an approximate 25% increase compared to 2024. The EIA forecasts that new utility-scale power generation facilities will reach 86GW by 2026, with solar accounting for 43.4GW and battery storage making up 24GW. The increase in demand from AI data centers is expected to raise electricity usage by 1% in 2026 and by 3% in 2027, driven by the demand from large computing facilities. The White House has directed that tax credits be terminated by July 7, 2025, which is prompting developers to accelerate their construction timelines. In the wind sector, legal variables remain, as the Oregon federal court has issued a preliminary injunction regarding the Department of Defense's halt on wind project reviews. Solar and battery storage represent a typical combination to respond to the increase in power demand, although several conditions must be met before actual completion. In the Korean market, competition for AI infrastructure is also leading to increased demand for power grids and generation facilities.
