UK Police Seize $1.4 Million Worth of Bitcoin from Closed Darknet Market
The Avon and Somerset Police in the UK announced that they have seized a significant amount of cryptocurrency originating from a darknet market that was once a stage for illegal transactions.
The recovered assets include 20.21 BTC (Bitcoin) along with other digital assets and funds in bank accounts, totaling approximately £1.03 million (around ¥222 million).
The main target of the investigation had a history of being convicted for money laundering but had already passed away before the asset seizure was carried out.
Background of Hidden Illegal Funds and Historic Crackdowns
The police's cyber investigation team and specialized analysts analyzed detailed transaction data on the blockchain. By tracking the inflow and outflow of funds, they traced it back to multiple darknet markets that operated from 2016 to 2019. These platforms facilitated serious illegal activities such as drug trafficking and human trafficking, and all have since been shut down by authorities.
This period from 2016 to 2019 coincided with a significant expansion of law enforcement crackdowns on darknet markets. In 2017, the largest AlphaBay was shut down through an international collaborative investigation, while Dutch authorities secretly conducted an undercover operation to take down Hansa around the same time. Furthermore, in 2019, the major site Dream Market ceased operations.
Persistent Records Shatter the Anonymity of Cryptocurrency
Cryptocurrencies are often overestimated as highly secretive means beyond the reach of investigations, but the history etched on public blockchains cannot be erased.
Detective Constable Anthony Davis of the police described the transaction logs remaining on the blockchain as "extremely powerful and essential evidence." By combining advanced digital forensic techniques with financial investigative methods, it has become possible to trace and identify past cryptocurrency transactions against the backdrop of overconfidence in the anonymity of cryptocurrencies.
Major Seizure Supported by Legal Reforms
The seizure was supported by amendments to the "Proceeds of Crime Act" that came into effect in 2024. The new regulations grant police the powerful authority to immediately freeze cryptocurrency wallets suspected of illegal activities, even without directly arresting suspects, and transfer them under their control. Additionally, they can seize notes or memory media containing private keys and invalidate (destroy) privacy coins that pose a high risk of misuse.
With the court recognizing the existence of illegality, these assets were officially confiscated. The recovered funds are planned to be used as resources for maintaining local security and safety measures in the future.
