Uber and Pony.ai plan to deploy 2,000 autonomous taxis in four cities across Europe, expanding their collaboration to compete in the Robotaxi market. Uber will provide the ride-hailing platform, while Pony.ai will be responsible for the autonomous driving technology. Local service providers may handle maintenance, cleaning, and charging of the vehicles during operations. The ownership of the Robotaxi fleet could be held by different partners to lower the operational barriers to entering new markets. Over the past few years, Uber has collaborated with more than 30 autonomous driving companies, while Pony.ai operates in four cities in China and works with local transportation agencies to facilitate vehicle entry into European and Middle Eastern markets. Earlier this year, the two companies also announced plans to launch a commercial Robotaxi service in Zagreb in collaboration with Croatian company Verne.
