Thailand SEC Issues Cryptocurrency Travel Rules, Requires Verification of Self-Custody Wallet Ownership
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand has issued cryptocurrency travel rules requiring digital asset operators to verify the ownership or control of wallets when customers transfer cryptocurrency assets to or from self-custody wallets. Additionally, operators must retain associated information for each transaction for at least five years for regulatory review. The new regulations will officially take effect on February 27, 2027, giving relevant businesses nearly six months to establish systems for transmitting, receiving, and monitoring transaction information. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, Secretary-General of the Thailand SEC, stated that the new rules aim to reduce the risk of digital asset operators being used for money laundering and terrorist financing. This regulation was finalized after two rounds of public consultation this year, and FATF statistics show that as of 2026, 83% of surveyed jurisdictions have enacted travel rule legislation. Furthermore, the Thailand SEC also proposed this Monday to allow intermediaries to provide retail investors access to certain regulated offshore exchange cryptocurrency derivatives.
