South Korea's Foreign Exchange Reserves Increased by $14.33 Billion in August, Setting a Record
South Korea's foreign exchange reserves increased by $14.33 billion in August, marking the largest monthly increase in history, primarily due to a significant rise in foreign currency deposits at the Bank of Korea by commercial banks. As of the end of August, the foreign exchange reserves rose from $427.95 billion at the end of July to $442.28 billion. The Bank of Korea stated that the growth in foreign exchange reserves was mainly driven by a surge in foreign currency deposits from financial institutions, as well as investment income and valuation gains from overseas assets due to the weakening of the dollar against other currencies. The improvement in foreign exchange reserves has strengthened South Korea's financial buffer, as the won weakened several times in the first half of the year, raising market concerns about external financing conditions. Earlier this year, the won briefly fell to its lowest level since 2009, prompting South Korean authorities to warn about excessive exchange rate fluctuations and to seek to curb capital outflows caused by retail investors heavily investing in overseas assets.
