Samsung's Taylor Wafer Fab to Begin Trial Operations by End of Month, 2nm Orders Fully Booked
Samsung Electronics' wafer fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas, is expected to enter trial operations around the end of this month, as demand for 2nm orders from clients such as Tesla, Broadcom, and Arm continues to rise, with pre-production capacity nearing full utilization. The plant has accumulated an investment of $37 billion since 2022, with plans to begin trial operations in early next month and achieve mass production next year, targeting an initial monthly capacity of about 50,000 wafers, close to TSMC's 80,000 wafers. The Taylor plant will produce Tesla's next-generation AI chip AI5, Broadcom's new generation communication chips, and Arm's AI chips for smart devices. Samsung's 2nm yield has improved from 60% at the beginning of this year to around 80% recently. The company dispatched personnel for process, equipment, and yield management to the plant in June, with equipment installation starting in July. Samsung expects its 2nm order volume this year to more than double compared to last year and announced that NVIDIA's inference chip Grok3 began mass production last month. Additionally, Samsung plans to raise the foundry price for 4nm by up to 15%. The second Taylor plant is scheduled to begin construction by the end of this year, aiming for mass production by 2030, and Samsung has requested its main partners to complete safety certifications for related production equipment ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Intel issued approximately $20 billion in new shares last month and expanded investments in 2nm-class 18A and 1.4nm-class 14A, while Japan's Rapidus completed its 2nm factory in Hokkaido last month and entered the wafer trial production phase.
