Ripple Recommends Withdrawal of XChainBridge Amendment
Ripple has recommended the community withdraw the XChainBridge (XLS-38) amendment for the XRP Ledger. Ripple cannot unilaterally delete the amendment, as validator consensus and open-source review are required. RippleX developers have also suggested organizing the fixXChainRewardRounding amendment related to XChainBridge. This recommendation serves as an example of the XRPL governance cleaning up outdated inactive features, with XChainBridge being the finalized XRPL standard draft as of February 22, 2023. Ripple adopted Axelar as the bridge for the XRPL EVM sidechain in June 2024, explaining that there has been no confirmed demand or projects needing activation during that period. Technical burden was also cited as a reason for the withdrawal recommendation, stating that if XChainBridge remains inactive, maintenance burdens will increase. If the withdrawal occurs, over 10,000 lines of code could be removed. Currently, XChainBridge is in-flight, with 5 out of 35 validator votes in favor. Ripple stated that Axelar will handle the bridge between the EVM sidechain and the XRPL mainnet. The decision on whether to withdraw XChainBridge has not yet been made, with the next steps being the proposal for Obsolete settings and community review.
