Model Context Protocol (MCP) Upgraded to Stateless Architecture

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has undergone its largest update since its launch in November 2024, now managed by the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. This update implements a complete transition to a stateless architecture, allowing MCP servers to be deployed behind standard load balancers without relying on "sticky routing" or shared session states, simplifying cloud-native and Kubernetes deployments. The new MCP enforces validation of the issuer (iss) parameter for OAuth and OpenID Connect to prevent mix-up attacks and introduces enterprise-managed authorization extensions to support unified identity governance for enterprises. Additionally, the protocol establishes a formal deprecation policy, ensuring that features are deprecated for at least 12 months before removal. MCP Apps and MCP Tasks have been upgraded to official extensions, enabling servers to provide interactive interfaces to AI clients and execute interruptible and resumable long-running asynchronous tasks through persistent task handles. David Soria Parra, a co-creator of MCP, revealed that the related SDK has reached approximately 250 million downloads per week, doubling in the past six months.
