Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., leaves the U.S. Capitol after the last votes of the week on ... More Thursday, May 1, 2025. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., bought Tesla stock for at least the third time this year, even though she continues to serve as chair of a House subcommittee overseeing Tesla owner Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to slash the government’s workforce and debt. Greene bought the shares despite chairing a House subcommittee that oversees DOGE, investigating wasteful spending and looking into reorganization options for the government. Congressional disclosure rules allow members to disclose their purchases in broad ranges, so it’s unknown exactly how much Tesla stock Greene owns. Greene told Forbes in a statement she “signed a fiduciary agreement to allow my financial advisor to control my investments” and usually finds “out about them when the media asks.” Greene bought between $1,001 and $15,000 in common Tesla stock on Monday, according to a new periodic disclosure transaction report filed with the clerk for the House of Representatives. The disclosure marked at least the third time this year records have shown Greene buying shares of Tesla despite a potential conflict of interest. In March, Greene also indicated she bought between $1,000 to $15,000 worth of shares, and on Jan. 8 a report filed with the House Clerk’s Office showed Greene purchased between $1,000 to $15,000 of Tesla shares in four different accounts. Greene, who serves as the chair of a House subcommittee that supervises Musk’s work with the DOGE, has made at least five Tesla stock purchases since getting that title. In a statement emailed to Forbes, Greene said her financial adviser controls her investments, all of which she said “are reported with full transparency.” She continued: “I refuse to hide my stock trades in a blind trust like many others do. Since my portfolio manager makes my trades for me, I usually find out about them when the media asks.” How Many Tesla Shares Does Marjorie Taylor Greene Own? Unclear. Greene’s stake in Tesla appears between $7,007 and $105,000, but the exact number is unknown because congressional disclosure rules only mandate lawmakers report their holdings under broad ranges, allowing Greene to file that she most recently bought between $1,001 and $15,000 in Tesla shares. She has logged seven purchases in that range since the start of the year. Owning Tesla Stock Was Previously Identified As A Potential Conflict Of Interest In March, Greene and the DOGE subcommittee she leads asked the Justice Department and FBI “to prioritize a thorough investigation” into what she said was a “recent wave of organized attacks targeting Elon Musk and Tesla car dealerships, charging stations, and vehicles across the country.” At the time, Brett Kappel, an attorney specializing in campaign finance, told Forbes “the letter could raise a serious ethics issue” for Greene because of House ethics rules that prohibit members from taking action to benefit their own financial interest. The House Code of Conduct states that no House member cannot “receive compensation and may not permit compensation to accrue to the beneficial interest of such individual from any source, the receipt of which would occur by virtue of influence improperly exerted from the position of such individual in Congress.” How Is Tesla Stock Doing? Tesla has struggled since Musk—who Forbes’ estimates is the wealthiest person in the world—took on a role in the Trump administration. Tesla stock is down more than 27% year-to-date as Musk’s work in slashing government spending and the federal workforce led to Tesla receiving backlash and sales worldwide falling. In late April, though, Musk said he would be “allocating far more” of his time to Tesla starting in May. The news came at the company’s quarterly earnings call, at which Tesla reported its worst quarter by revenue and sales in years. Since the earnings call on April 22 when Musk said he would be spending more time at the company, though, Tesla share prices are up about 15%.
