Floods in Nepal Damage Nine Hydropower Plants, Country May Import Electricity from India
Floods in Nepal have damaged nine hydropower plants, resulting in a loss of 360 MW of capacity. This accounts for about 8% of the country's total generation. A 25 MW solar power plant and five under-construction projects with a total capacity of 390 MW were also affected. Hydropower provides over 90% of Nepal's total generation of 4,300 MW, so the destruction of hydropower plants is a significant blow. Nepal typically exports electricity to India in the summer and imports it in the winter. Last year, the country exported 600 MW and planned to increase exports by 500 MW this year. Repair crews are working to restore the facilities; however, Nepal is likely to be forced to seek imports from India to cover the shortfall. Flooding caused by a glacier collapse has submerged villages and destroyed infrastructure, claiming the lives of at least 300 people, with over 1,300 reported missing. Experts warn of increased vulnerability to extreme weather events due to the rapid construction of dams in the Himalayas.
