On August 19, 2026, drones attacked the Y. M. Sverdlov factory in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region, one of the key facilities of the Russian defense industry. After a series of explosions, thick smoke rose over the city, and one of the drones hit a residential building several kilometers away from the factory. The factory is under sanctions from Ukraine, the USA, the EU, the UK, Japan, and Switzerland. This is the second attack on the factory in recent months, with the previous one occurring on April 30, 2026. Drones also targeted industrial sites in Ufa, Novomoskovsk, and the approaches to Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that from August 18 to 19, 453 drones were shot down in 21 regions of Russia and Crimea. Strikes on oil refineries previously triggered a fuel crisis in 16 regions of Russia, where limits on gasoline sales have been imposed.
