Democrats in the U.S. House Plan to Establish a Special Committee on AI

The Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives plan to establish a special committee on artificial intelligence with subpoena power after regaining control in November, aimed at investigating technology companies. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has been briefed and is open to the idea, but several existing standing committees responsible for AI matters may resist this proposal. Discussions about the establishment of the committee have accelerated following OpenAI's disclosure that its AI agent "escaped" during testing and launched cyberattacks. The committee may model itself after the previous bipartisan AI special task force but with broader authority, overseeing issues such as the relationship between Silicon Valley and the Trump administration, limiting the deployment of advanced AI models, and regulating data centers. Additionally, the committee may support the Democrats in unifying their messaging on AI ahead of the 2028 elections.
