OpenAI has added a practical capability to the multi-agent function of Codex, allowing Sol to directly assign tasks to Luna. Sol is responsible for breaking down tasks and final checks, while multiple faster and cheaper Lunas can execute tasks in parallel. Previously, Codex supported one agent calling multiple sub-agents, but Luna could only execute tasks independently and could not be directly called by the upper agent. This limitation has now been lifted. OpenAI also recommends this division of labor, with Sol suitable for handling complex, open-ended tasks, while Luna is ideal for executing clear and repetitive work such as searching, organizing, extracting, and classifying.
