Bitcoin Faces Short-Term Challenges, Long-Term Potential Remains
Bitcoin's short-term outlook has become more challenging due to firmer-than-expected core inflation, which raises the likelihood of tighter Federal Reserve policy, potentially capping Bitcoin below 80000 dollars. CoinShares' Head of Research, James Butterfill, noted that the long-term scenario depends on the U.S. Treasury's bond buyback program failing to reduce long-end yields, which could support the debasement narrative for Bitcoin and gold. Recent data showed the consumer price index, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% in August, exceeding expectations. Traders see an 85% chance of higher interest rates following the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting, a scenario that typically favors Bitcoin. However, the Treasury's bond buyback efforts have not significantly lowered long-term yields. If yields remain high, pressure may mount on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to implement a larger buying program to reduce borrowing costs. Bitcoin experienced a strong performance in August after the announcement of an expanded bond buyback program, leading to speculation about a resurgence of the debasement trade, where investors buy assets to hedge against currency devaluation.
