August Employment Expected to Be Around 50,000, Unemployment Rate to Remain at 4.1%
The U.S. employment report for August will serve as a test to gauge whether the Federal Reserve's policy focus will shift from employment to inflation ahead of the September FOMC meeting. The Labor Department will release the employment report on September 4 at 9:30 PM, and the market expects non-farm payroll growth to be around 50,000, with the unemployment rate hovering around 4.1%. This will be the first monthly indicator following the weak employment figures in July, where non-farm employment decreased by 23,000 and the unemployment rate stood at 4.1%. By sector, employment in local government education and retail has declined, while healthcare employment has shown an upward trend. Inflationary pressures still exist, with the July PCE price index rising by 3.7% year-on-year. The Fed Chair has indicated that the labor market is 'consistent with full employment' and stated that inflation remains a primary focus. The July benchmark interest rate was held steady at 3.50-3.75%, and the interest rate market sees a 55.9% probability that rates will rise to 3.75-4.00% at the September 16 meeting. If August employment improves, the debate may shift towards inflationary pressures, while a weak recovery in employment could delay the judgment that July's weakness was temporary.
