Ethereum Proposes Contract for Quantum Signatures and Replacement of BLS
Ethereum is advancing its post-quantum strategy with a proposed deposit contract for validators, allowing the use of keys of various sizes and the incorporation of quantum-resistant signature systems. The proposal, presented on August 24 by Kevaundray Wedderburn, Thomas Coratger, and Tom Wambsgans, aims to replace the current BLS signatures and the Merkle tree of the deposit contract with a more flexible system. This is necessary as alternatives like leanXMSS require much larger signatures, complicating their integration into the current system. BLS signatures allow for the aggregation of multiple validator signatures, but their security could be compromised by quantum computers. Google Quantum AI estimates that 1,200 logical qubits would be needed to attack Ethereum's cryptography, a risk that the network seeks to mitigate before 2029. The contract is still under development and must be reviewed and integrated with other EIPs before its voting. The proposal is part of a broader strategy by the Ethereum Foundation to anticipate quantum threats.
