Anthropic Introduces Context Lock for Claude to Prevent Model Distillation
Anthropic has introduced a "context lock" for Claude's reasoning, requiring that encrypted thoughts generated via the API must be returned along with the system prompts, tools, and historical messages used at the time of generation. If the preceding content is modified, the API will return an error or discard the thought. This change aims to prevent model distillation, as researchers found that Claude's encrypted thoughts could be read by other models, allowing attackers to exploit high-quality reasoning to induce weaker models to leak the complete thought process. Anthropic had previously implemented a protective measure when releasing Fable 5 in June, limiting encrypted thoughts to be bound to specific models. Fable 5.1 further introduced a "dialogue binding" mechanism, whereby any modification to the preceding prompts, tools, or chat history will invalidate old thoughts. This lock is not yet fully implemented; new API accounts opened after August 31 will be required to enforce this rule, while older accounts are temporarily unaffected. Models such as Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Cowork are not included in this scope, and Anthropic has stated that future new models will have this rule enabled by default.
