U.S. Bitcoin financial services firm River estimated that approximately 825,000 individuals worldwide hold at least 1 BTC, equating to about one person per 10,000 in the global population. River's estimate began with around 972,000 addresses holding at least 1 BTC, excluding those managed by companies, governments, ETFs, and exchanges. The firm estimated the number of exchange customers with at least 1 BTC by assuming the distribution of BTC holdings among exchange users mirrors that seen on-chain. Based on this methodology, the number of holders with at least 1 BTC is estimated at about 825,000, with a possible range of 600,000 to 1 million, considering a global population of approximately 8.2 billion. River noted that all figures are estimates, as blockchains record addresses rather than individuals, and one person may control multiple addresses while a single exchange address can hold assets for millions of users.
